DISCOVER WHY COMICS ARE IMPORTANT

The next time someone says something like "comics are pointless", show them this.

Welcome to "Comics are Important"! My goal is to put out a series of personal and analytical essays about certain comics that I am passionate about and have the same literary value as prose novels. In addition to this, you will find articles regarding the comics that I plan on reading for the week. In the future, I plan on expanding to other mediums such as video games and animation as well as providing updates on my own personal creative projects. So sit back. Pick an essay. And enjoy!     -Griff

Books I’m Stoked for: Nocterra

Updated: Sep 10, 2020

EDITOR'S NOTE: Scott Snyder and Tony Daniels recently announced that they are changing the name of the book from Nocternal to Nocterra. Personally, I like this change. I feel like the combination of the words "nocturnal" and "terra" makes more sense than "nocturnal" and "eternal".

Welcome to a new segment where I talk about recently announced books that I’m stoked for. Today, I’d like to talk about a new Kickstarter that just launched from Scott Snyder and Tony Daniel called Nocternal (yes, that is how it’s spelled, I’m pretty sure that it’s a combination of the words “nocturnal” and “eternal”). Nocternal is going to be an ongoing Image Comics series written by Scott Snyder and drawn by Tony Daniel that will launch sometime next year.

Here’s the description of the story from the Kickstarter:

“NOCTERNAL takes place ten years after the world is plunged into an everlasting night that turns all living creatures into monstrous “shades.” The only way to survive is to stay close to artificial light. There are rumors of sanctuaries –perpetually-lit bunkers– where the shade-transformation can even be reversed, but most people assume these are just legends. Enter Valentina “Val” Riggs, a skilled “ferryman” who transports people and goods along deadly unlit roads with her heavily illuminated eighteen-wheeler.

When an old man promising sanctuary offers Val a job to drive him and his granddaughter up through the Rocky Mountains, she takes it, hoping there might be some truth to his claim. What she finds in the end, though, is something much more horrifying than any shade…”

Honestly, I was going to back this Kickstarter for the story alone, but there are other aspects that Snyder and Daniel are adding to this first issue that make this deal even sweeter.

Most Kickstarters are created in order to fund a product; however, where Nocternal differs from this is that whether they meet their goal or not, the book will still come out through Image Comics. The point of raising money is to create a pseudo comic-con experience. For example, backers will receive an exclusive collector’s edition of the first issue that includes the full script and unlettered, black-and-white pages. The cherry-on-top is how backers will get this before issue one even comes out. In addition to the book itself, Snyder and Daniel want the Kickstarter rewards to have a huge focus on connecting with fans. Some of these rewards include exclusive artwork from Tony Daniels and a class in writing first issues from Scott Snyder.

One more thing about this project that I’m stoked for is that this will be the first book under Scott Snyder’s new Best Jackett Press imprint where he’ll be working on more creator-owned stories like Wytches and Undiscovered Country.

So what do you think? Are you also stoked about this new series? If so, I highly recommend you back it on Kickstarter so you can get on this series at the ground floor!
