DISCOVER WHY COMICS ARE IMPORTANT

The next time someone says something like "comics are pointless", show them this.

Welcome to "Comics are Important"! My goal is to put out a series of personal and analytical essays about certain comics that I am passionate about and have the same literary value as prose novels. In addition to this, you will find articles regarding the comics that I plan on reading for the week. In the future, I plan on expanding to other mediums such as video games and animation as well as providing updates on my own personal creative projects. So sit back. Pick an essay. And enjoy!     -Griff

What I’m Reading 9/9/20

Image Comics

  • Oblivion Song issue 27

    • Written by Robert Kirkman

    • Art by Lorenzo De Felici

    • Colors by Analisa Leoni

    • I’ve been really digging this current arc so far. It’s been fun getting to know the culture of the Kuthall, but I’m glad that we’re going back to Earth especially since there’s been another time jump. Also, I’m just happy for Nathan that he’s back in his home dimension.

  • Reaver issue 11

    • Written by Justin Jordan

    • Art and colors by Niko Henrichon

    • This second arc, The Grim After, has been an improvement from the first arc. I’m not saying that the first arc was bad. The world and plot were really strong, but I didn’t think that the six main characters were given equal development. That’s why I appreciate what Jordan has been doing in this arc by focusing on two of these characters, Breaker and Rekala.

  • Stealth issue 5

    • Written by Mike Costa

    • Art by Nate Bellagarde

    • Colors by Tamra Bonvillain

    • This is it! The penultimate issue and the big climactic battle between Stealth and Dead Hand! Check out this extremely underrated series before its finale!

Collections to watch out for

  • Outer Darkness / Chew Image Comics

    • Written by John Layman

    • Art and colors by Afu Chan and Rob Guillroy

    • It is a damn shame that Outer Darkness was cancelled! It had the perfect balance of sci-fi and horror while not being afraid to crank up either genre to eleven. On top of that, the characters were all spectacular with really cool designs and roles. Afu Chan’s art style nailed the tone of the series perfectly! Overall, this amazing series ended way too soon, and deserves a second chance.

    • As for this story arc, it was a really fun and meta crossover with co-creator John Layman’s other comic that he did with Rob Guillroy Chew! Despite both series taking place in two entirely different locations, they both mesh together pretty well.

    • So please, if you like sci-fi, horror, or just a compelling story, I think you should check out this crossover as well as the first two volumes of Outer Darkness!
